Matheo 2016

Spegelbilden har börjat tala!

29/9 2015:

Tiden gick fort denna morgon.

In Athens 1964 / I Aten 1964

Here in my strict, clean, clever and efficient Sweden, you are an improbable figure, Matheo!

Your body lacks weight when you fly your kite - your Cretan boots
lose all contact with the green hills of Gärdet. Your eyes are both serious and happy.

Or you dance, alone in your room, barefoot, on a winter morning.
You dance, cry perhaps. Or laugh, warm in spite of the goddam snow outside.
What will your neighbours in the big, red house think? Is he crazy, the greek? Why does he dance? Alone!
Is he drunk at eight o'clock in the morning!

Improbable. Different. You l o o k at us.
Don't you know that it is dangerous to really look at another human being?
Will you never learn to let your glance glide, as over a blank surface?

Don't look at us, Matheo!
Your open gaze makes us confused.

Gittan Mannberg and Ulf Stråhle (photo)

förlorar all kontakt med Gärdets kullar.

Digital winter greetings from Matheo:

Digitize your everyday life! Here are some new digital gadgets that was presented in the newspaper Metro on January 7 and 8 2015.

The CES 2015 exhibition in Las Vegas is filled with technical innovations:
Let's start with "The Mirror that helps you with your makeup" - how do I look in glitter makeup? Mustasche? Rouge? Take a look in this gimmick! Then you make your coffee with "The coffee machine that can be operated by mobile phones", and "You relax when the sound of the stress in your brain is transmitted as music."
You stop thinking about the present when you browse through the list of innovations, because soon you can "Take photos of your surroundings, and live the rest of your life in Virtual Reality with you Virtual Reality glasses", while you let "The Camera that recognizes your family" keep the contact with your mother and your other relatives, not only on Christmas eve! And don't forget to put on your Rocket skates - Segways hidden in a pair of rather expensive shoes, 4000-5000 SEK. With these shoes you can walk fast, not just lean forward in the ordinary Segway style. And don't forget to look at a "Virtual picture of reality with VR-goggles that has a rather low resolution". Then it's off to the massage chair - the only negative thing about that chair is your fear that the computer programme should collapse, and the robot masseur cut off one of your fingers.

Dear friends!
Our life has already been tranfsformed into a place for, and of, consumtion. Our everyday life has turned virtual, with mobile phones and other electronic gadgets to keep us company. We replace the human warmth in the elderly care with robots, we "meet, enjoy and talk" from a distance, our fear to meet a person in person with a glance or a smile is huge. To digitize life with robot-like things is the aim of capitalism.

Time for a cup of coffee, I press the coffee button on my mobile phone, but nothing happens.

With warm winter greetings, Matheo

A long journey starts with a step
You follow the light that leads you onward in your search

One shiny night I saw myself as in a drop of today... the sun, the moon, the sky, the flower...
and I climbed into myself to find a free corner, a place for my thoughts.
I am a mix of cultures...
I want to breathe, dream, relive my earlier life
I want to talk about art, about Minotaurus and films, about the continuation of my journey,
this journey that started with a single step so many years ago

About Herman...

The newspaper Expressen 2 March 2014: Herman is excluded from the child celebration!

Poor Herman Lindquist, you were not invited when the new Swedish princess Leonore was celebrated. In spite of the fact that you were an important person when the princesses Victoria and Madeleine were raised and educated, and an important representative for the Swedish Royal House, you now, once again, had to stay at home. There will be about 250 to 300 guests, many of them former employees, the Royal Court’s assistant press officer said to the journalist, but he doesn’t belong to that category. But to which category do you then belong, you the great historian and teacher of Sweden? You who taught these unemployed older princesses, Victoria and Madeleine, to read, write, count, but unfortunately not to think, and all this with the people’s tax money? Okay, you said what you thought about princess Estelle’s name, that it sounded like the name of a night club queen, and therefore you were not invited when she was celebrated, and now it has happened again. Regardless of all your years as the royal court’s faithful teacher you now once again are left out because you dared to venture your opinion about the uncertain future for princess Madeleine with all her billions in USA, and for princess Leonore’s importance to her home country if she is raised outside of Sweden. You, who just have written a book about princess Victoria, should have known how things work in Sweden regarding the royal family and the upper classes; Only the surface and the package counts, nothing else. We have payed, with many billions, for the king’s brothel life, and have accepted all the whims of this family, because here in Sweden we applaud names, titles, rich clothes, empty brains and the pseudo charisma of the Royal House. The illiteracy regarding our history is enormous. A royal family that sits on its throne year after year is celebrated, in spite of the futility of its existence, is being paid for with billions, and then locks an important historian out from his domaines, for his wise criticism.

About Leonore...

Now Her Royal Sweetness, the new Swedish princess, has got a name. No, not one name, but three, which will make it difficult for her grandmother if this princess gets lost - she will then have to shout Leonooore Liliaaan Mariaaa...! And just as difficult as that will be for her, just as difficult it is for us to accept yet another unemployed princess, in this unemployed family. How is a princess born and created? Is it her father's billions, or her mother's social ranking that entitles the child to this status? Or is it ours', the people's, insane tendency to still, in this year 2014, accept monarchy and thereby justify the titles to these unemployed, ignorant individuals that we call princes, kings, queens and princesses! How many poor sick children could be saved, how many more midwives could get a better salary for their important work, how much could we improve the education in our schools, and take better care of the elderly, with our royal family's appanage? It is time to wake up, face reality, and question the billions that we, the people, pay for this costly royal theater year after year. Matheo

Från bloggen "Samma skit - här som där"

2003... I had left my cell phone and my camera by the security guard at the entrance to the Swedish Security Police, and hidden my Minidisc recorder and my small microphone in my pocket. Now I was sitting in the small room at the police head quarters, reading the security police's files about myself...

A new reminder of the times gone by I found on Christmas Eve 2013! If you search my name on Google you will, among others, find "The same shit - here as there!" This site was a surprise for me, but its contents is still a reality in our society. In Sweden we still, after more than 60 years, live in a "George Orwell-society".
I came to Sweden in the sixties, and as soon as I arrived here I was hired as a graphic artist by the SR (The Swedish Television). At that time I still had my dreams and visions about a better and more equal society. This was the time when people climbed the elms in Kungsträdgården, Stockholm, to keep them from being cut down. It was an unprecendented epoch when all of Europe and The US started to fall apart. The dictatorships in Spain, Portugal and Greece, as well as the impoverishment of the "third world", the war in Vietnam, and the crisis in South Africa and Palestine was on the agenda. Wars and dictatorships were being questioned by students and all free thinking citizens, and I thought that I had nothing to lose. The laws in my new country were generous and, instead of shutting up, I remained true to my conviction that a man must stick to his believes regarding issues about the world and the society around him. Often, during our coffee breaks, I would ask my collegues about their opinions about God, about Vietnam, about monarchy as an institution in a socialist community etc, convinced as I was that an interesting conversation was the best way of relaxing. Our boss, who always was present at these occasions, often interrupted me with the phrase "we don't ask these kinds of questions in this land". And then the bullying began... And it went on for a long time...
But then again in 2003 I got, after a long mail conversation with Säpo (the Swedish Security Police), permission to read some of my files, and Göran Lambertz asked for my forgiveness!    Thank you, my unknown friend for posting in "Same shit - here as there!" Such posts are needed so that we can start living and thinking as free individuals in this slumbering and americanized consumption society!     Happy New Year! Matheo

Matheo

The somersaults

The somersaults
- I do them for you!

The rocks were not there
before you made me seek
signposts, distance markers

I am all dried out,
the tracks of blood under the heather
wear your DNA

Once again I swing myself upwards

High above the heads of the audience
your womb is aglow

(From "The Sensuous Overalls")

My great grandfather, Stefanos Martzokis, the romantic poet

Certain drops

Certain drops
don't even reach
their water
Your forehead
must be wide open
to receive them!
So fast, so light
- your senses just wriggle
for a millisecond
And then you are changed

(From "The Sensuous Overalls")

Wear the your green hat this evening and let it be your guiding light, your pilot, and dream you free, free from society's maze, free from politicians' corruption and lies, free from the grey sea's dead waves, free from bureaucracy sadistic (idiotic) paragraphs. You breathe no longer capital poisoned breath. You fly over borders, over the clouds, over religion and fanaticism. Think, think of the people you love them and take them with you in your dreams, on your trip. A journey without a goal, but the port, just for this one night.

Sometimes I feel like I was an old soul that thousands of years have passed from body to body searching for new ways and richer lives. Every life is a journey, a unique opportunity to enrich the soul with experience, a springboard for new discoveries, new conquests and sacrifice. The whole I'm a mix of cultures and its light leads me to constantly search for the sun's light in me. Sometimes, when the senses are upset and adrenaline makes me tremble, I can see clearly the path I chose to go through life. One way in which art, film and social justice thoughts fill my everyday life Where would I find them beautiful words, when knowledge and images of the present, no longer gives you something to hope and dream about. Full of war, injustice, corruption, racism, fascism and ecological destruction, is our world. Capitalism, greed, bank valuations, fanaticism and political cowardice, indifference and corruption dominate the earth, man's loneliness grows. Since years, we lost the vision and courage to fight for social justice and if it is true that cowardice and indifference is the worst sin ... where is the love that helps me to swim against the tide, to reach resistance and creations light that every free thinking man has within himself.

Happy New Year with Health, Love and Inspiration

A glimpse into "The Sensuous Overalls", the new book with poems by Ove Wahlqvist and superb illustrations by Matheo Yamalakis. The book is called "Det sinnliga blåstället" in Swedish, and "The Sensuous Overalls" in English.

Never playback

Everything happens here
painfully now
- never playback!

Naked on the stage
you catch me in
the spotlight's circle

Everything happens now
painfully here
- never ever playback!

(From "The Sensuous Overalls")

You fell through the branches

You fell through the branches
Catching leaves and barque with your hands
as you went down
Heavy as basilica
with one single target: earth, roots
From high spaces
already with the underworld
in your veins

You were seen as an eagle
But you yourself knew, even up in the sky:
mud, groundwater, bedrock
Your air currents came from the deep
Your wings faked the power to fly
but you were always wedged into the ground,
the worms already knew you

And I saw your fall
It was I who pulled away the safety net
Because we all have to fall freely

Now your weight lives
in the germination

Welcome to The Art Studio on Zakynthos!

Zakynthos May 2013

A letter from The Traveller Matheo to the people of Zante, so warm and full of spirit.

The way you adored, embraced and honoured me gave me strength to proceed on my path. Bright and glittering were you, dear friends, when you attended my exhibition "Dancing with the Minotaur". Bright and glittering were also our cluttered thoughts, our discussions about life, the Minotaur, the world, human values, capitalism, religion, and our own urge to exist in the present as creators. Moments truly unique for the artist, moments who filled me with inspiration for new efforts and ideas. Your eyes and words welcomed the Minotaur, our alter ego. I danced with you, laughed, discussed, and never ever did you leave me in solitude - always you will be in my thoughts.

Everything started an early spring morning in Sweden with an e-mail from The Solomos Museum. In the e-mail Katherine Demeti put forward her idea to present the portrait of the poet, my great-grandfather Stephano Martzoki which I donated to the museum. Then I received a call from Dionysis, Mantis and Iridas' friends with the suggestion to exhibit my art in their new hall, and to project my film "All the Afternoons" in the Kino of Foscolos. These comrades inspired me on my long journey. Now back in Sweden, wistful, I recall unforgettable moments, thankful for the memorable and enjoyable days, so full of dreams and strength, and hope for continuation when I come back to you.

And... when you reach the island, and before you dry from the salty sea, you see your own eyes in the others' eyes, and you wonder if their eyes are answered in your heartbeat. Matheo

On April 10 I received a nice email from The Museum of Dionysios Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians (my mother's family moved to Zakynthos in 1834, to escape the persecution of the pope). On May 18, The International Museum Day, arranged by ICOM (International Council of Museums), I am invited to honour the memory of my grandfather, the romantic poet Stefanos Martzokis, who died 100 years ago, and to present his portrait, which I have donated to the museum. I will have a small exhibition, and the screening of my film about Venice ("Venice on the skids") will close the day. You can find my grandfather's portrait here on my web page.

A Monday in Stockholm

Today, Monday March 18 2013, outside of Willys grocery store on Gotgatan, Stockholm, Sweden. It is snowing. A young man, probably of non-Swedish descent, runs from the store with a plastic bag containing around 10 cans of beer. He is stopped by two employees, a man and a woman. He is laid down, and pressed firmly to the ground, he screams, tries to get up, is being even more firmly pressed down, one of the employees holds his head in a tight grip. The woman calls the police. First a guard appears, then two police cars, with five police officers in each car. One of the officers tries to stop the blood running from the mans hand, the man is lying motionless on the ground, the officer shakes him, but he remains totally lifeless. Finally three policemen lift the body and carry it to one of the cars.

I go home, thinking that our police force is very efficient when it comes to stolen beer cans - one police officer for each can - but when a threatened, helpless woman asks the police for help, afraid that her husband shall kill her, then the police and the state bureaucrats refuse to help her, and she is being murdered after a few days, just by her husband. Nothing surprises me in this country anymore. Everything is possible in a Sweden that is being ruined by our current governments liberal politics. The countrys future lies in the greedy hands of risk capitalists and tax refugees. The society evolves backwards, and corruption grows from day to day. A country fettered by the chains of liberal capitalism, by corruption, by criminality, a country with a bad education system, bad elderly care, bad health care and huge unemployment rates, plus an extra unemployed family - the so called royal - that costs the taxpayers millions for no good.

The 13th of January I had my birthday. The day passed beautifully, in the afternoon we had a nice meeting in my place eight friends, four bottles of champagne, snacks and Matheo’s Tzaziki special, conversations for many and beautiful thoughts and visions, unforgettable four hours! I have hunger for life, sun and experiences.

With Light and Love, Matheo

The denial of the People's and the Gods' laws
Since many centuries, I listen to Apollo's Lyre and the Dolphins' laughter
I never accepted gifts from the Rulers
fully aware that my refusal would open the gates to loneliness
And... when you have arrived at the island, before you wipe away the sea's salt water
you start looking for your own eyes in other people's judging eyes
wondering if their glances respond to your heartbeat

If it's true that cowardice and indifference are the worst of all sins, then it's important that all free individuals take a stand, against capitalism, against anything that smells of globalization, religion, consumption, fast clips - talk freely upright, have humour, compose, write, paint, start conversations and let the thoughts flow. Discover, watch and protest against the absurd and inhuman in the New World picture...

...Then it's love that helps me swim against the current...

Civil obedience

1. Civil obedience is to look at, but not react, when the general property of the people, hospitals, libraries, industries, schools and retirement homes, which are paid for by our taxes and work, are sold to private venture companies.

2. Civil obedience is to shut up when the companies that we citizens have supported and paid for with our taxes, are moving abroad, leaving behind thousands of unemployed.

3. Civil obedience is to wait without reacting, weeks and months, to get surgery for a vital operation and just wait. Yet it is your tax money that built the welfare state, hospitals and sickness funds.

4. Civil obedience is watching without reacting the police violence against young people who react to the injustices of society.

5. Civil obedience is knowing without reacting that you might have to leave your home because you cannot any longer pay the high rent that the owner charges you for the necessary repair, which he is obliged to do in the house.

6. Civil obedience is to listen without reacting to financial journalists who day after day with their so-called market analysis give you the false sense that the world would go under if not the free economy and the stock exchange had been around, yet you are aware that they follow His Master's Voice and the actual play on the Stock Exchange.

"Humanity needs socialism today more than ever before"

Matheo and Lena in Kungsträdgården (The Royal Garden)

A February afternoon in Athens
It is saturday afternoon, February 25 2003, the day of the first greek demonstration against the plans to invade Iraq. A large crowd of demonstrators are heading towards the american embassy in Athens, which is surrounded by the police. I am on my way to my exhibition. I have brought my camera, my constant companion, not wanting to miss a single opportunity to document the world around me and inside of me. In the exhibition area I meet four law enforcement officers who have forgotten their boring tasks of the day and instead rest their minds on my pictures. I decide to take the opportunity to document my unexpected guests. I start to film as we talk about art, but nothing about the impending war and the demonstrations. Time after time the premises are filled with an endless stream of voices, music and anti war slogans. Stubbornly my guests ignore the reality outside, and instead ask questions about art and culture. Finally we agree on the most important question: "Where are we actually heading?"
Did we mean with art, with the world, or with the individual?

A vernissage is an event where the expectations, dreams, visions, eye glances, embraces, tears, joy, take over, embrace and enrich your life with the unforgettable moment: between dream and many hugs. The afternoon began at the Gallery Art.se hospitable place and ended at the home of Matheo. Thanks to all my artist friends: Loretta Nigals, Bengt Yman, Lena Röpke, Lou Lundqvist, Güntert Rolf, Sara Berlin. Always welcome to my heart, my home!

Beauty in the gallery!

About Minotaurus

If it's true that cowardice is the worst of all sins...

In our society's labyrinth dwells my second ego, my Minotaurus, and he is depicted in many of my paintings. He flies with joy, cries in his loneliness, ascends to the full moon with his beloved creatures. Ariadne's ball of yarn doesn't lead to death. Minotaurus uses it instead to reach his witch. He takes a stand against everything that smells of globalisation, religion, commercial consuming, "good bargains". Now it's up to all free individuals to chose side, to speak freely and undauntedly, to show feelings, to compose, write, paint, to start conversations and let the thoughts flow. To discover, see and protest against the absurd and unhuman in the new world order. This is how we learn to love.

...then it's love that helps me swim against the stream!

About Minotaur 1

13 Feb 2012:

Two new posters for two of my films, "In Athens" from 1981 and "All the Afternoons" from 1996. The next month a new journey to the island of Zakynthos is waiting for me. There I will meet friends and for the third time in one year I will show some of my films and start working with a new film about the island, the culture and my old grandfather. A journey back to the memories from then and now and the Greek reality of today.
